This might be LG's best Smartphone yet

The latest Android smartphone is the LG V30, a high-end handset in every sense: It features a dual camera setup, class-leading processor, and an edge-to-edge OLED display. But LG focused primarily on the video and audio experiences with its latest flagship, to deliver one of the most impressive mobile entertainment packages we’ve seen in years.

Sleek design and display

The V30 has been heavily inspired by the design of the LG G6. It features a similar “bezel-less” screen, with rounded corners bordering the display, and the same orientation of the dual cameras and fingerprint sensor around back. The sides are glass, which doesn’t help with durability but the phone does look more polished than last year’s metallic LG V20.

The six-inch screen features an 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 2,880 × 1,440, just like the G6 — although it differs in one significant way. Whereas the G6’s panel was LCD, the V30’s is OLED. It is a new direction for LG and in line with the way the industry is heading, thanks to the technology’s ability to provide more vivid colors, perfect blacks, and dynamically conserve battery.

It is also a departure from a trend established in previous V-series devices — the second display. Unlike the V20 and the V10 before it, the V30 does not have a “ticker” above the primary screen, beside the front-facing camera. The full-face display negates the need for it, the company claims and it replaced the shortcuts and action previously stored there with a software solution — a floating quick actions bar that can be revealed or hidden at any time.
Flagship specs and class-leading audio

Beneath the glass, you will find a phone that, internally speaking, shares much with other leading Android smartphones. The V30 carries Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, paired with 4GB of RAM. The base model offers 64GB of internal storage, though you can expand it thanks to a MicroSD slot. The battery weighs in at 3,300mAh, which is about average for its class, and there’s support for wireless charging.

One of the ways the V30 differentiates itself is in its audio system. Similar to last year’s V20, LG has fitted the V30 with an upgraded 32-bit Quad DAC system for richer, more accurate sound. We loved what we heard from the phone’s predecessor, and LG is the only mainstream manufacturer really innovating the listening experience in this way, so we hope the implementation is spot-on once again. The phone will also stream high-resolution audio in a way that conserves more data.

Sadly, the V30 won’t follow the V20’s footsteps to be the first smartphone to launch with the latest version of Android. You won’t find Android 8.0 Oreo on the V30, but Android 7.1.2 instead. LG has confirmed it is already working on bringing the update to the V30 shortly after the phone launches. LG does have its own theme over Android, and you’ll see some new special features like Voice Imprint, which lets you unlock your phone with a pre-selected voice phrase; and a facial recognition feature lets you unlock the V30 with your face. Google Assistant is also on-board, and LG has worked with the search giant to offer commands tied to the cameras that only work on the V30.
Promising dual cameras

Alongside the audio experience, LG invested a great deal of effort into improving the V20’s already strong camera. The V30 utilizes a similar pairing of a standard and wide-angle lens, with the former rated at 16 megapixels and the latter at 13. But the new device goes a few steps further, with a f/1.6 aperture and f/1.9 apertures, respectively. The bigger aperture will allow more light into shots, which should especially improve images captured in dark environments. LG said it should also help reduce distortion with the wide-angle lens. At the front, there is a five-megapixel wide-angle shooter for selfies.

LG also implemented a new technology with the V30 known as Point and Zoom. Simply tap an object on the screen and a slider will appear, allowing you to close in on that aspect of the frame first using the wide-angle lens, before switching to the normal one, and then using digital zoom. It should be a handy feature for producing fun videos and blends the V30’s two cameras in a seamless, intuitive way. It works in a new camera mode in the V30 called Cine Video, which offers a number of color graded themes designed around movie genres. These are added to videos before you start filming.
Improved durability

One of the V20’s weak points was its lack of durability. Although it complies with a variety of military standard tests, it isn’t water resistant — putting it at a disadvantage next to the Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7. Part of that was due to the removable battery and back cover, which has been removed this time around. Sealing the components has allowed the V30 to achieve that IP68 rating. We feel it is a worthy trade-off.

Additionally, the V30 utilizes a combination of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides, and Gorilla Glass 4 over the camera lenses to keep the device scratch and shatter-free. LG also says it improved the handset’s heat management and dispersion — something phone makers do not typically point out, which is an encouraging sign.
Release date and availability

We are still awaiting information from carriers and retailers regarding the V30’s availability and price, and we will update this section as we hear more.

After the V30 is official, customers in South Korea will likely be able to pre-order the phone first. Prior to Thursday’s reveal, Android Authority reported pre-orders would begin in the region on September 15, with the U.S. following on September 17, and then the rest of the world on September 28.

Whatsapp Beta for Android gets verified/celebrity account features.

WhatsApp verified profiles for businesses were reportedly being tested on the Windows Phone beta app, and now the company has come forward and announced how the feature will work on the Android beta version. With this announcement, WhatsApp has added another feature to its growing list of features introduced in 2017; another major feature coming to the app will be UPI integration for convenient money transfers. With this move, WhatsApp joins the ranks of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in having verified profiles, and taken a step towards increasing the convenience with which users can communicate with businesses on the platform.

In an FAQ post regarding the new update, the Facebook-owned social media app said that some business accounts have already been verified by WhatsApp and that if you see a green badge with white tick mark next to a contact's name, you can be assured that it has been verified by the company as a business profile.
How WhatsApp verified profiles work

"WhatsApp will also let you know when you start talking to a business via yellow messages inside a chat. There is no way to delete these messages from the chat. If you already have a business's phone number saved in your address book, the name you will see is the name you have saved in your address book," the company said in its post.

In case you don't have a business' phone number stored in your address book, you will see the name that the business has chosen for its own self inside the app. Also, in case you don't want any business to bother you on WhatsApp, you will always have the option to block them, just like any other contact.

The company has clarified that WhatsApp business verification is currently limited to a small number of businesses participating in a pilot program.

WABetaInfo, which first spotted the feature, has pointed out that with the release of 2.17.285 version of the Android beta app, the way in which users can view a business account and the information that is available, has been revealed. As per the report, WhatsApp has updated its servers to improve the synchronisation of your contact numbers. In case there is a business contact in your address book, it reportedly will not download that contact again.

The report also mentions that the new "Business Info" section, which can be seen in the image above, will come with information like the address of the business, the real name of the business, the mail address of the business, and its website. In case the business has an account on Instagram, you will also be presented with the link of that profile as well.

The best free VPN 2017

Depending on what you're up to online, it is entirely possible that you do not want your online activities to be traceable – particularly in parts of the world where internet surveillance is a serious issue. There are various reasons for wanting to use free VPN (virtual private network) software, but the two main ones are to hide who you are, or to hide where you are. Why might you want to do either of these things?
According to a recently released report, almost one in six people in the UK are now using a VPN (or proxy server) with their internet connection – and half of them have turned to a VPN in order to get access to region-locked sites or services, according to new research.
As for wanting to disguise where you are, this has the advantage of opening up websites that might otherwise be inaccessible.
There are a large number of websites – often video or television sites – that use geo-locking to try to block visitors from certain countries, and free VPN software can be used to get around these restrictions.
It can also be used to bypass site blocks put in place by governments – like the one in Turkey – and ISPs, effectively getting around censorship, and helping to preserve freedom of the web.
Although the authorities can crack down on VPNs themselves, such can be the perceived threat from the services, as we’ve seen in China recently with the news that certain ‘unapproved’ VPNs will be closed down – and Apple has actually removed some VPN apps from its iOS store in the country.
One of the affected providers, ExpressVPN, noted it was “troubled to see Apple aiding China’s censorship efforts”, but Tim Cook hit back, saying that Apple has to obey the laws of the countries it operates in, and VPN services need to have a licence from the Chinese government.
Furthermore, Russia recently passed a law which seemingly ushers in a ban on VPNs, but in actual fact, this is more about forcing providers into censoring sites which are blacklisted by the government. Firms that don’t comply, though, could well be shut down.
Another interesting point: new statistics from security firm Barkly have shown that 45% of internet users still keep clicking on dangerous links, but a VPN can help here. Some VPNs offer malware blocking or URL filtering to help prevent the less tech-savvy from stumbling into a phishing site, or contracting a virus online. VPNs are also great protection when using insecure public Wi-Fi hotspots.
At any rate, here's our pick of the best free VPN software to keep your online activity safe and anonymous.
A word of caution. Criminals have stepped up their efforts to infect internet users by masquerading their malware as innocent-looking applications, this is particularly true for mobile platforms where free VPN clients are particularly popular. So be wary of freshly launched VPN services or offers that are too good to be true (they usually aren't).
Also bear in mind though that VPN services are as secure as the weakest link in your setup. So if your device has already been compromised with malware, using a VPN won't save you from being spied upon, however, antivirus solutions could.

1. TunnelBear

Protecting your identity doesn't get easier than this – TunnelBear is the best free VPN around
Number of servers: ~1,000 | Server locations: 20+ | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: 5
Really user-friendly
Both mobile and desktop clients
Not many options or settings
TunnelBear might have something of a cutesy design, but it's a serious free VPN. There are free and paid-for subscriptions to choose from. The only restriction with the free one is that you are limited to 500MB of traffic each month.
Performance is impressive and ease of use is second to none. In all likelihood you won’t need to change any of the default settings, and the automatic connection option should work fine, but you can manually choose from one of 20 countries as your adopted location. Delightfully simple and reassuringly secure, TunnelBear is certainly one of the best free VPN's for all your devices.
It’s also interesting to note that TunnelBear recently tuned up its privacy policy, so the VPN now collects even less data on users – removing the need to supply a first name to sign up, and ditching its record of the user’s number of total lifetime connections.
Want to try TunnelBear? You can download it here

2. Windscribe

Super secure, with a very generous data cap, Windscribe is a top-notch free VPN
Number of servers: N/A | Server locations: 8 | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: 1
10GB of data per month
Sterling privacy policy
No Android client
Windscribe is a relative newcomer to the free VPN scene, but its generous data allowance and commitment to protecting your privacy make it the best around. The free service gives you 10GB bandwidth per month as standard, and lets you choose from eight remote server locations.
You only need to create a username and password to sign up (an email address is optional, but might prove handy if you forget your password). Windscribe doesn’t store connection logs, IP stamps, or visited sites; when you’re actively connected to a server it stores your username, the VPN server you’re connected to and the amount of data transferred, but this is erased within three minutes of the session ending.
The 10GB data allowance is enough to make Windscribe’s free service a practical option for everyday browsing (though not heavy downloading or streaming), and there are several ways to boost it even higher.
Tweeting about the service will earn you an extra 5GB, and you’ll get 1GB each time you invite a friend to join. As an added perk, if anyone you’ve referred decides to upgrade to a Pro subscription (starting at US$7.50 per month billed annually), you’ll get the unlimited plan as well and far more servers.
If that isn’t enough to tempt you, there’s even a built-in adblocker and firewall. Give it a try today – we think you’ll be impressed.
Want to try Windscribe? You can download it here
Hotspot Shield Free is extremely easy to use, and offers a generous data allowance

3. Hotspot Shield Free

If you use public Wi-Fi regularly, this is a great free VPN for protecting your privacy
Number of servers: N/A | Server locations: 1 | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: 5
Easy-to-use
750MB daily data allowance
Performance can suffer a bit
Limited configuration options
Hotspot Shield Free is one of the better known names in this roundup, and another of the best free VPNs around today.
You can choose to anchor yourself to one of 20 countries if you pay for the Elite version of the app, and this should enable you to access just about anything you want; in the free version, you're limited to locations that Hotspot Shield chooses for you.
Hotspot Shield Free offers the option to have the free VPN automatically enabled whenever you connect to a wireless network that is deemed 'unsafe', the program offers peace of mind for those who work away from the home or office a lot. Online performance does seem to suffer a little when Hotspot Shield is enabled, but the bandwidth limit of 750MB per day is generous.
Note: Hotspot Shield’s free VPN offering has recently come under fire from the Center for Democracy & Technology, a pro-privacy non-profit organisation. The CDT has claimed that this provider intercepts and redirects traffic to partner websites which include online advertising firms. Hotspot Shield has denied these allegations and said that it was “dismayed that the CDT did not contact us to discuss their concerns”.y.
The latest we’ve heard is a clarification which comes via Ars Technica, in which a spokesman for Hotspot Shield noted: “The free version of our Hotspot Shield solution openly and clearly states that it is funded by ads, however, we intercept no traffic with neither the free nor the premium version of our solutions. Our users’ online privacy has always been our absolute priority.”

4. Speedify

Want a secure yet speedy connection? Then look no further
Number of servers: 30+ | Server locations: 20+ | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: 5
Nifty performance boosting tech
Solid on the privacy front
Only 1GB monthly data allowance
Software has few low-level controls
Speedify, as the name suggests, has one main aim as a VPN provider: to ensure that while you benefit from encryption, your internet connection remains as speedy as possible.
To that end, the service will make use of all available internet connections to get the best possible performance, potentially combining, say, an Ethernet connection (fixed broadband) with a tethered mobile 3G/4G connection. Even if you only have one type of internet connection, the firm claims its turbocharging technology will still help speed things up.
As well as the promise of better performance, Speedify operates a clear no logging policy, meaning it doesn’t monitor your internet traffic. And it offers clients for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, and access to over 30 VPN servers.
The free plan boasts full access to those servers (just as with the subscription options), the only restriction of the free offering being that you’re limited in the amount of data you can download.
Free users get 4GB of data for the first month, but that drops to 1GB during subsequent months. That’s not a massive amount, and certainly not as much as some other rivals you’ll see elsewhere on this page, but it’s still enough for some basic surfing and email duties.
And this VPN provider is definitely worth a look on the performance front, as during our testing, the aforementioned speed-granting technologies did actually prove themselves to have a positive effect.

PrivateTunnel is a free VPN that offers protection for all of your devices - both desktop and mobile

5. PrivateTunnel

A free VPN that’ll keep your data and identity safe on any PC or mobile device
Number of servers: N/A | Server locations: 9 | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: 3
Wide range of clients
Simple to use
Limited choice of locations
Inconsistent performance at times
Like some of the other tools featured in this roundup, PrivateTunnel is available for a number of platforms – specifically Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Another characteristic shared with many of its contemporaries is the existence of a limited, free package in addition to paid-for subscriptions. Well, sort of. Rather than offering a traditional monthly subscription package, you are instead provided with 200MB of non-expiring data to use as you want.
When this runs out, you can purchase more data in bundles of 20GB or 100GB. If you feel that you'd like to use PrivateTunnel all the time, you can opt for a $30 per year package which give you unlimited data – see the 200MB as something of a taster session to see if you like everything.
As a VPN, PrivateTunnel works fairly well, although connections can be a little temperamental at times. It's all very easy to use, so there's little reason not to take it for a test drive.

Free VPN tool freelan gives you total control over your connection, but its somewhat tricky setup means TunnelBear and Hotspot Shield Free are better choices for novice users

6. Freelan

A free VPN for experienced users who are comfortable with the command line
Number of servers: N/A | Server locations: N/A | IP addresses: N/A | Maximum devices supported: N/A
A very different approach
Hugely flexible
No graphical UI
Definitely not for novices
The installation of Freelan is a little disconcerting for the uninitiated. Rather than just installing a regular program, the software installs new network drivers that take control of your web traffic. That's not a problem, but it's something that's worth pointing out right from the start.
Freelan is an open source tool and is free in absolutely every regard, but getting it set up can be tricky, particularly for novices. For more advanced users Freelan has a great deal to offer, but you should not expect your hand to be held every step of the way as well the likes of TunnelBear.
For most people this is going to be a program to avoid, but for the curious, the more technically-minded (there's no graphical user interface, so you'll be controlling it via the command line) and those who want to be in absolute control, it's ideal.
